Be a part of Giving HOPE……..
I’ve spent many nights lying awake, wondering about how things might have turned out differently. What if someone had been there to guide and support me when I first came home after serving three and half years inside a state prison?
I went in at age 18, and was still basically just a child when I returned home a few years later at age 21. Despite earning my GED and learning basic carpentry skills, no one was willing to give me a (first) chance to prove myself when I got out. I was never allowed to wash off the stigma of my crimes and move on with my life, even after my sentence had expired.
Eventually, I chose to “live into” the expectations I came to perceive everyone had for me. And inevitably, I landed right back inside for the very same crimes as the first time. History repeating itself. Only this time my punishment was far more severe. This time, I received 213 YEARS without any chance of parole.
WHAT IF…What if someone had been there to guide me and support me when I first came home after serving three and a half years in prison? What if I had been given HOPE?
I sincerely believe things would have turned out differently for me, for my family, and for everyone else impacted by my crimes had I been blessed with a mentor to guide and support me when I was first released from prison.
