Back in 2017, we first shared the story of Marshay Patterson, a woman determined to rise above her past and step boldly into her future. Since then, her journey has continued to unfold in ways more beautiful than she once thought possible. Today, we are honored to share an update on her life, her love, and her purpose. Allow us to introduce you to…

Mrs. Marshay McDowell: Living Her Purpose
When Marshay first walked through the doors of HOPE for Prisoners, she carried not only her past but also a question that weighed heavy on her heart: Could I be seen as a woman of valor and live a life beyond my mistakes?
Today, she stands with confidence and joy, knowing the answer is a resounding, YES.
A Love That Strengthens Through Trials
In November 2019, Marshay married Nicholas McDowell (Nick) in a ceremony officiated by HOPE’s founder and CEO and friend, Jon Ponder. From the beginning, Nick has been her partner in every sense of the word, celebrating victories, navigating challenges, and building a foundation rooted in faith, respect, and unconditional love.
In early 2025, Marshay faced one of the hardest decisions of her life: to choose her health over the possibility of bearing children. Undergoing a hysterectomy was not easy, it meant closing a door she had once hoped would stay open. But Nick never wavered. He chose her, her life, and their future together above all else.
“My husband accepts and loves me for me. This allows me to feel empowered to move freely in my purpose.”
Together, they’ve emerged stronger than ever. Marshay describes this chapter as a “Season of rediscovery, resilience, and recommitment – where love is not just felt, but actively chosen every day.”
Three Beautiful Parts of Her Life Today
Her Marriage & Partnership
For Marshay, marriage to Nick is more than companionship, it’s healing. It’s the reassurance that she is valued for who she is, not what she has been through. Together they’ve built a home, weathered storms, and found joy in everyday life (including their two beloved fur babies, Gizmo and Sam).
Her Purpose in Service
Marshay found her home here at HOPE for Prisoners. She is a valued employee that brings life, love and actual lived experiences that she gets to pour into women every day working alongside Dr. Carolyn Willis. “If I can plant even one seed in a woman who feels hopeless, then I know I’ve lived my purpose.” Her calling is clear: to use her story to speak life, courage, and faith into those who are still walking through the struggles she once knew too well.
Her Creative Calling – “I refuse to let the greatness within me, die with me.”
With the support, Marshay is building a brand called Keep It Awkward, a movement encouraging people to embrace their authentic selves and find joy in the messy, in-between places of life. Soon, she will launch journals and workshops to help others develop healthy mindsets and celebrate their own journeys. “I’m creating the very tools I once needed myself,” she shares.
A Word to the Next HOPEFUL
Marshay’s advice to anyone considering HOPE is simple but powerful:
“Take the risk. Say yes. It will be the best risk you’ll ever take. It’s not just a program. It’s a new life. It’s family. It’s a chance to walk into a clear vision for yourself. It’s actual HOPE.”
